   "description": "River herring are culturally, ecologically, and commercially important species with declining population numbers along the east coast. The term \u201criver herring\u201d refers to two species of diadromous forage fish, alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis). Many state governments, non-profit organizations, and community science groups conduct surveys of herring runs to document location and/or assess population size. This dataset fills a specific need identified by the Northeast Regional Ocean Council\u2019s (NROC's) Tribal Caucus to aggregate information on herring runs and their health, given river herrings' roles as keystone species, important food sources in a variety of ecosystems, and historically declining populations.\n<br/> <br/> \nThe River Herring and Shad Runs layer provides point locations of runs throughout the Northeastern US with links to additional information on managing entities and fish counts. The dataset is focused on river herring but includes information on other diadromous species such as American shad and American eels where available. Portal users can click on points showing the approximate locations of runs to view more information about each, including entities that organize fish counts and points of contact for more information.\n<br/> <br/> \nThe data were aggregated from a number of sources, including the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (MA DMF), the Peconic Estuary Partnership (PEP), and the ECOFish Shad and River Herring Run Data Portal (created by the Gulf of Maine River Herring Network and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, hosted by Manomet). The development of this dataset was funded by NROC and guided by the NROC Tribal Caucus.",
